Turkish Jewellery Delight
Istanbul is a global jewellery supermarket. Being the point of the East and the West meeting, it plays the leading role in Turkey and is recognized as a world jewellery centre. It is especially true during the Instambul Jewellery Show I that this year took place from March 21 to 25, 2007. The Show is an event of great importance that influences the development of both manufacturers and retailers.
Russian customers have quite ambiguous attention towards Turkish jewellery: some like it tremendously, some are very suspicious. On the one hand, we should respect the five-century history of Turkish jewellery art, specific Eastern design and gold carats (22, 24 carats), and on the other hand, customers often question the quality of Turkish jewellery.
At the opening ceremony in March 2006 one of the exhibition heads said: “You will cede all your positions if you strengthen cheap mass jewellery. Now it is the time to invest into jewellery design.” This speech witnesses about the wish of Turkish jewellers to renew their traditions, emphasise the quality and design, and therefore to change the approach and the policy in the country’s jewellery sector.
The Show in March 2007 has showed that the influence of ancient cultures led to the development of a distinctive design approach that unites the traditions of the East and the West, and plays an important role in the modern jewellery fashion. It is original design that Turkish jewellers consider to be the future of the sector.
Antique-styled jewellery is becoming more and more up-to-date. At first glance it seems to be a piece of elite bijouterie, but its cost and shine of diamonds set in “ancient” gold destroy these thoughts.
The jewellery of Turkish leading companies – such as Atasay, Roberto Bravo, Zen, Goldash, and Midas – experienced a constant demand during the Show. It is important to note that all these companies pay great attention to Russian market too, having not only patrons on our country but representative offices in Moscow as well.
One Russian company – Yuviland (St.Petersburg) – participated in the exposition. Having passed the customs obstacles, it presented Russian jewellery to the audience of the Show. “The purpose of our participation was merely to inform about us, – a representative of the company said us – we do not sell anything here, we just attract new customers and make contracts.”
Among the visitors there were the representatives of Russian jewellery sector – from Moscow, Kostroma and other regions, and Ukraine. This is an evidence of trust that Russian retailers show towards import jewellery – not only Turkish business people are interested in the expansion of the cooperation between the two countries. Turkey exports its goods to 136 countries, first of all to the USA, UAE and Israel. Russia is likely to enter this list.
