In 2004 Russian diamonds import to Armenia amounted to 131.3 thou ct
According to the agreement signed in 2002, 2.1 mln ct of natural jewellery and 3 mln ct of technical diamonds should have been supplied to Armenia till 2006. However, in 2004 only 131.3 thou ct were imported from Russia to Armenia that is only 13% of the amount planned.
In 2003 after diamonds production liberalisation in Russia the prices of these gemstones exceeded the prices in international market. That’s why Armenian businessmen are not able to import all the diamonds allocated. Only 130 thou ct were imported in 2003 instead of 400 thou planned. Last year the same situation is taking place.
Armenian part hopes that ALROSA this year will reconsider its price policy and the volume of diamonds imported to the country will increase significantly.
