On May 23th - 24th, 2003, the Second International Symposium "Development of the diamond market" took place in Smolensk. It was organized by the Russian Diamond Union and the Organising Committee of the International Business Conference “Russian precious metals and gemstones market: current situation and future development” and supported by the ALROSA JSC and the Production Association "Kristall".

The Symposium was timed to the 40th jubilee of Smolensk “Kristall” Company. The aim of the Symposium is to increase the productivity of the domestic diamonds sector. It was held within the frameworks of the Sixth International Business Conference (RPMG-2003), the ITAR-TASS news agency being the general information sponsor of the conference.

Among the Russian participants of the event there were the representatives of JSC “ALROSA”, SUE “Kristall”, Sakha Republic (Yakutia), Diamond Chamber of Russia, Diamonds Manufacturers Association, Russian Diamond Council, The Union of Gold Manufacturers of Russia, the Bank of Moscow, Lanta-Bank, journalists etc. The list of foreign participants included the delegates from Belgium, Israel, Ukraine and Byelorussia.
