B a s e l ![]() Time of Basel 2000
![]() Basel 2000 time was kept by watches and clocks of many exhibitors.
Presented for the visitors' judgement this year was a collection of women watches "My Choice". The collection features amazing highly polished watches with mother-of-pearl face and diamond hour markers. A remarkable part of the collection were three new "seductively elegant" steel or 18K gold models with Roman numerals and diamond bracelet. But the most stunning innovation was the company's shift from round watch shapes to square and rectangular. Noteworthy is the fact that another world famous Swiss watch company, Patek Philippe, accepted rectangular designs. Along with this the trend is seen towards a wider usage of yellow gold in watches. It is well known that the company has always been paying more attention to developing watch mechanisms but at the same time not forsaking design collections. New models include mechanic traveller's watch with a rectangular face and 10 - day wind that can be easily set according to any time zone. The marketing vice-president of Patek Philippe Tania Edward mentioned that the company expects the watches to be in high demand in the US.
Citizen presented an electronic model "Eco-Drive Vitro", which allows light energy to be brought in directly through the watch crystal. Tissot's debut was the multifunctional "T Touch" watch combining watch, barometer, thermometer and compass.
Festina introduced a model capable of measuring a cyclist's speed. The watch is to go on sale in early summer.
Seiko Corp. is planning to begin production of the new collection of sport's watches "Sportura", which was too part of the show collection. The watch has a steel body and can perform under the pressure of up to 100 m of depth. Another feature of the collection is sapphire crystal of the watch which suppresses the reflection effect. The cost will range from $425 to $2.500 depending on the functions presented.
Swiss company ETA presented new quartz model "Autoquartz ETA 204.911" featuring automatic wind, which until recently was used only in mechanic models. Mechanic energy is transformed into electric which is then accumulated in the cell.
A truly intricate mechanism was introduced in the "Le Papillion" model by an Indian company Titan Industries, Bangalore. The mechanism was designed in Switzerland. Its peculiarity is in its compactness made possible thanks to the use of titanium (1.15 mm thick). The whole watch is about 3 mm thick. The price is more of less low - $125.
Many observers mentioned the fact that a number of companies placed a special emphasis on collections for young people marked by reasonable prices. Thus, an American watch company Rado presented at the show the series Xeramo, with prices ranging from $590 to $790. "The watch wrist" of the company was Vanessa May who seemed to take special interest in the new collection and she hopes that the new models will favor the tastes of many young people. The company president Andy Kessler noted that the company is planning to start an active advertising campaign of Xeramo series in press, television and the Internet.
