SEPTEMBER 18
ALROSA is going to invest $3.125m in the development of diamond deposits in Kareliya in line with the agreement achieved with the republican government.
The fields are appraised to worth $650m-$1bn. The project can be staged this year.
The prospecting in Kareliya was launched in 1994 by Ashton Mining Ltd.(AML). But the financial difficulties made the company to stop the works. Now AML is resold to De Beers and are interested to prolong the cooperation with the Russian side.
ALROSA is one of the largest diamond producers in the world; it covers 20% of the total production due to the $2.6-2.8bn/y worth output. It has four mining plants and about 20 mines.
