Yakutia intends to become more independent from its diamond industry

Last weekend Alexey Kudrin, Minister of Finance of Russian Federation and the Head of the Supervising Council of "ALROSA" together with its President Vladimir Kalitin, and Viacheslav Shtyrov, the President of Yakutia discussed future development prospects of the company . In the nearest future President Putin is to sign the Decree providing liberasation on the diamond market , but the company itself might have to review its investments, and Yakutia might suffer from its budget income, much dependant on '"ALROSA" .

Vice -Prime Minister commented to "Izvestia" that Decree would be released in the nearest to or three weeks which also extends terms for export quotes for diamonds.

Such important members met prior to September meeting of the Supervising Council of "ALROSA". The previous meeting of the Council recommended to review five-year development plan of the company as well as "ALROSA" strategy up to the year 2015, which includes push-up for the works in Archalgelsk (where the diamond mining is to take place in 2004), as well as in Africa (in Angola and Kongo). At the moment "ALROSA" is engaged in development of "Katoka" diamond deposits in Angola, hoping to increase the number of its licenses in September. On the whole, "ALROSA" has claims for 4 deposits in Angola.

In the meantime Yakutia intends to become more independent from "ALROSA" (which forms 70% of the local budget) and from central Federal authorities.
