JULY 3, 2001 ![]() Moscow Meeting of Kimberley Process Members
International conference on Conflict Diamonds opened in Moscow today. According to Izvestia experts in diamond industry who gathered from different countries will discuss issues of uncut diamonds certification.
Problem of so called "bloody diamonds" which finance guerilla wars in Africa was the center of attention a year ago and is very acute now. Still the decision has not been found.
The idea of the international conference headed Kimberley Process is to break this link between wars and diamond sales. Now diamond producers discuss the international diamond certification.
This issue has been discussed many times about a year ago, but at the present conference the positions of the members are not that easy to come to one point. The point which fears most is if the world general organization on diamond problems be established it might function as monopoly and it would be difficult to influence its decisions. It may result in the possibility of pure diamonds to be treated as bloody ones.
