ALROSA Opened an Agency in Israel

ALROSA opened an agency in Ramat-Gan (Israel). Actually, in circumstances when Russia has complication in situation with De Beers the step is very ambiguous. Israel has been longing to buy Russian diamonds for a long time - being one of the biggest diamond polishers this country doesn't mine a carat. In April 2001 alone it polished diamonds worth $265 mln, while Russia polished $850 mln during the whole period of 2000.
So, when it was announced about the agency emerging in Israel many mass-media services related the fact to the expiration of Russia-De Beers Agreement. Maariv Israel newspaper wrote that Lev Leviev is possible candidate for the place of De Beers. Although ALROSA Management disproved this information, Sergei Ulin said to Vremya Novostei, "We will sell our own diamonds in Israel, the rest depends on market situation".
It is curious that an article with no links or authors emerged at jewish.ru (financed by Federation of Jewish Communities - sponsored by Lev Leviev. "RF Government tries to lessen De Beers influence on diamond market and decided to organise market for unpolished diamonds in Israel. In accordance with it ALROSA is to open its agency. On May 21 delegation of high rank associates arrived to Israel to discuss the prospects of future collaboration". The details are not known as the heads of the company are on a business trip. Not to Yakutia but to Israel.
