De Beers to Continue Cooperation With Russia
Under the current agreement transnational corporation De Beers is purchasing from Russia diamaonds worth $100 mln, General Director of De Beers Centenary Russia Raymond Clark said. According to him regular profit from diamond sale is one of the main advantages Russia get from trade agreement with De Beers. The current trade agreement expires at the end of 2001.
Clark stressed that De Beers is trying to conclude a new agreement with Russia as the company is interested in selling as much diamonds as possible via one channel - Diamond Trading Company (DTC, De Beers trademark).
According to Raymond Clark, at present De Beers produces 50% of the total world diamond volume and will aim to preserve a position of the biggest diamond producer. "Talks that we are leaving the market and cease to be a monopoly can't be treated as serious", Head of De Beers Agency in Russia said. "We are not leaving, on the contrary, we are firm in our efforts to support diamond market.
