MARCH 17

A number of African countries firmly denied all UNO accusations of helipng the Angolan rebel movement UNITA in its fight against the government. The report of UNO Angola Committee, addressed to the Security Counsil, states that the presidents of Togo and Burkina Faso personally made deals with the UNITA leader Jonas Savimbi on selling diamonds in exchange for weapon and fuel.

In his report in Security Counsil the Togo representative said that the Sanction Commitee of the United Nations used rumours and gossips of UNITA deserters as a basis. Particularly, the report claims that Bulgaria was the main source of weapon supplies to UNITA. It also criticizes Belgium for poor supervision of diamond market in Antwerp. The report, presented by a Canadian Robert Fauler, suggests that sanctions be imposed against all the countries which have broken the embargo toward UNITA.
