Since its foundation the Bank of Russia has been issuing memorable coins made of precious metals and circulating at the domestic and world markets. (previously the coins were issued by the State Bank of the USSR).

In the period 1988-1996 the Bank issued over 30 series of memorable coins made of gold, silver, platinum and palladium alloys of total over 4 million pieces. Lately the Bank has been minting coin series of such long-term programs as "100th Anniversary of Russia", "Russian Ballet", "The Red Book of Russia", "Russian Architectural Monuments", "Prominent People of Russia", "Let's Keep Our World" and series dedicated to geographic discoveries.

In 1995 and 1996 the Bank of Russia issued special series dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the World War II Victory, 50th anniversary of UNO, 300th anniversary of Russian Fleet. In 1996 the Bank first issued into domestic circulation gold and silver coins for investments purposes. The coin 'Sobol' is 3 rubles worth and contains 31.1 g of pure silver and the gold 10-ruble coin containing 7.74 g of pure gold.

Coins of the Bank of Russia are minted at the Moscow and St. Petersburg Mints and are marked by a high level of artistic design and flawless minting quality. Memorable coins of the Russian Bank have been repeatedly recognized by Russian and international awards and were selected the best coin of the year by foreign numismatic editions and organizations. Memorable and investment coins of the Bank of Russia are distributed by Sberbank, Gazprombank, Promradtehbank and other banks.
