American customers spent $2.8 billion on the Internet trade in January, 2000. The amount can be compared with that spent by the Americans over the whole of 1997 ($2.4 billion). In 1998 the Internet trade totaled $8 billion and in 1999 - $20.2 billion. The analysts say that such exponential growth is connected with the service becoming more and more widely spread as well as the customers getting used to buying stuff over the global net. According to the research of Forrester company on customer preferences in the field of electronic trade in January of 2000, the most demanded were airline tickets ($318 million). The second position is occupied by computer equipment and books (over $224 for each). Then follows computer software ($187) and clothes ($182). Hotel reservations took $164, toys and video games - $146, music - $143 million.
