On the 17th of January The Central Bank of Russia issues into circulation
the memorable silver coin worth 2 roubles and dedicated to the 150 birthday
anniversary of the Russian mathematician – the first woman – member of the
Peterburg Academy of Science, the professor of math in Stockholm University
and the great writer – Sofia Kovalevskaya.
As the Department of the foreign and public relations of the Central Bank informed,
the coin was produced with a proof quality and a drawing of 5000, has a great mass
of precious metal in the cleanness of 15.55grams and the hallmark of alloy – 925.
The coin has a rounded shape with a diameter of 33 mm. Both sides of the coin have
the prominent edging. The side surface of the coin is corrugated.
On the front side of the coin, there is a double-headed eagle in the circle and
the inscription that says”THE BANK OF RUSSIA”. Over the circumference it says
“TWO ROUBLES” and the year of mint 2000. Between them there is a symbol of the
metal, the hallmark of the alloy, the mint sign “MMD” and the mass of the
precious metal in the cleanness.
On the back side there is an image of Sofia Kovalevskaya in the oval against
a background of the architect monuments over the math book, the Saturn and
rose, including two dates “1850” and “1891”.
The Department of the foreign and public relations of the Central Bank
stresses that the issued coin is the legal payable mean of Russia and
is obligatory in the acceptance at the nominal cost for any payments.
